Along with rosewood and ironwood, it is considered one of the three major precious woods. The material has a jet-black color, is dense, heavy, and solid, making it suitable for intricate woodworking. The darker the wood, the more valuable it is considered. The heartwood ranges from dark brown to yellow-brown. The wood surface is dense, with high density, and has few small blemishes.
